Want To Corner Your Own Niche? Coin Your Own NURD
“I was forced to go to a positive thinking seminar. I couldn’t stand it so I went outside to the parking lot and let half the air out of everybody’s tires. As they came out I said, ‘So . . are your tires half full or half empty?” – comedian Adam Christing

The folks at Webster’s just released this year’s new words.

Many are poster children for a
POP! technique called Half & Half in which you blend the 1st half of a word with the 2nd half of another word to coin an original word that belongs to you. Webster’s new words include:

* frenemy -someone who pretends to be a friend but isn’t

* staycation – Have fun at home instead of hitting the road

* green-collar – The environmental version of white collar

* shopportunity – It’s not a sale; it’s a shopportunity

NURDS (my word for new words) transcend clever word play.

Why? Coining a new word increases the likelihood you’ll be able to get the URL. Furthermore, a NURD name turns your idea into a proprietary brand you can trademark which means you can license, merchandise and profit from it in perpetuity.

=0 AFor example, Tongue Fu! has generated 7 figures in revenue for me and its certified trainers around the world.

Want good news? You don’t have to have an MBA or a million dollar budget to create a NURD.

POP! provides a step-by-step process anyone can use to create an original word so you no longer look and sound like everyone else. In fact, four-time Pulitzer nominee Fawn Germer says, “You don’t have to be a creative genius to use Sam’s techniques; however, using her techniques can make you a creative genius.”

What do you want to break out? Use
POP!'s exercises to coin a proprietary NURD that gets you noticed. Examples include:

• Snuba (a new sport that’s half snorkel and half scuba)
• Diabesity (a NURD coined by Dr. Francine Kaufman to describe Type 2 diabetes partially caused by obesity)
• Freakononics (Would you run to the bookstore to buy a book on economics? NURD titles make the uninteresting intriguing)
• Ciao Mein (a restaurant with Italian – Chinese food)
• InterNetiquette (keep your manners in line while online)
• Adultlescents (Twenty-somethings who move home)

Are you serious about your success? If you want to thrive in today’s tough economy; call 1 800 SAM-3455 to schedule a consult so we can coin a NURD that captures the media attention, customer20buy-in and sales you want and deserve.

Who Said This?
“Regrets for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable.” -- Who said this?

The first person to email the correct answer to Cheri@SamHorn.com will receive their very own choice of one of Sam's CD's for FREE.

This quote is featured in my What’s Holding You Back? book and is from an English essayist who lived more than 160 years ago(!); proving the wisest insights are timeless.

An important message of that book is that, as Carl Sandburg said, “Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.”

What are you waiting to do? Is that a regret waiting to happen?

As a workshop attendee told me recently, “I'd rather have regrets about something that didn’t work out than spend the rest of my life wondering what could have happened if I’d followed my gut and done what I wanted.”

Are You Listening to Your Customers?
“My wife made me get glasses. I wasn’t seeing things her way.” - comedian Mark Klein

A USA Today article reported that some sit-down chain restaurants are now making almost 1/4 of their income from drive-up food service.

Seems people are tired after a long day at work and don't want to go into the kitchen and fix dinner. They want a “decent meal” so they call ahead to places like Outback to order curb-side service. The restaurant brings the food to their vehicle so they don’t even have to get out of their car. The whole transaction usually takes less than 5 minutes.

What got my attention was that P.F. Chang had resisted this drive-up, drive-away option even after customers had begged for it. Why? The CEO explained "We're an upscale bistro. We didn't want to be perceived as Chinese take-out."

After watching other restaurants cash in on this trend, P.F. Chang’s CEO announced in a BAO (Blinding Attack of the Obvious), "We finally realized we're in the business of listening to our customers, not arguing with them."

Hmmm. Where are we not listening to our customers?

Do your clients repeatedly request a product or service that you don’t offer? Do you explain why you don’t do that?

Would it be smarter to see things your customers’ way and figure out how you could offer it?

What Do Smart Speakers Do in Slow Times?
“When you speak, your words echo across the room and down the hall. But when you write, your words echo down the ages.” - Bud Gardner, Chicken Soup for the Writers Soul

What do smart speakers do in slow times? They write!

Many colleagues around the country have told me they’ve taken their half-finished book off the shelf, dusted it off, and resumed writing.

Good thinking. If your calendar isn’t quite as full as it used to be, put that newfound time to work for you.

You’ve heard that a good book is the best business card? It’s more than that.

Writing a quality book will catalyze benefits you can’t even imagine at this point. Here are just 3 pay-offs you’ll reap when you write. A quality book can:

1. Take your spoken message global. That’s not an exaggeration. Many of my clients are reaping the rewards of international deals. In fact, John Strelecky’s book The Why Café is in 18 different languages and was a bestseller in Singapore (rated over Malcolm Gladwell and Jim Collins). John has traveled to China and Spain to conduct paid book-signings and programs.

2. Be multi-purposed into e-books to generate online revenue. Look at your Table of Contents. Which chapters could be turned into a White Paper or Special Report? E-books generate almost pure profit because they have little or no overhead.

3. Motivate decision-makers and potential clients to hire you. Meeting planners want proven topic experts. Are you losing business to colleagues who have a book and you don’t?

Imagine how gratifying it will be to hear from readers who share how your book has impacted them. I still smile every time I remember the email from a man in Toronto who said he was reading Tongue Fu! in his hot tub. He called it Tub Fu. And I will always remember showing up at a Take the Bully by the Horns book-signing in Northern California and a couple and their teen daughter walking in with a well-thumbed, heavily underlined copy, saying it had saved their daughter’s life.

Make 2009 the year you turn your intentions into action. If you want to avoid regrets, stop wishing and start writing.

Prefer to work in person to kick-start your book? I’ll be in California the first week of August and will be in Hawaii, Maryland, Chicago, Orlando, Indiana, and New York in the coming months. Check my calendar www.SamHorn.com to see when I’ll be in your area and perhaps we can schedule a face-to-face consult while I’m in town.

And be sure to read the “Ideas Into Income” article (later in this newsletter) which explains my new coaching option which can speed up the writing process.

A Shout Out to Sam's Clients
"When someone does something good, applaud. You'll make two people happy." – Samuel Goldwyn

How wonderful to see my clients appear on major media, receive a standing ovation from the Harvard Medical Conference (!), climb the ranks of Amazon.com, and successfully re-brand their business.

I wish I had room to showcase everyone's success. Here are just a few of the people I’m fortunate to work with who are reaping the rewards of our work together.

Thank God It's Monday: How to Create a Workplace You and Your Customers Love, by Roxanne Emmerich, CPAE, made it to #1 the first week of its release. Roxanne, who was in my Maui Writers Retreat group years ago, has consulted with half of the nation’s top 1% performing financial institutions.

The Introverted Leader, Build on Your Quiet Strength by Jennifer Kahnweiller, addresses the fact that many people would rather run from the room than work it. If you want to be judged by the value of your on-the-job performance instead of whether you're the life of the party, buy this book. And if you fly American, yes, that was Jennifer featured in the May issue of American Way Magazine.

Why is it many organizations spend billions hiring and training Gen Y’s and Gen X’s – only to lose them months later? In Keeping the Milennials, Joanne Sujansky, past President of ASTD and Dr. Jan Ferri-Reed explain why. Spend 15 minutes reading this eye-opening book and you'll understand why it was featured in Time Magazine.

You know you're in for a page-turning book as soon as you read the opening paragraph of How NASA Builds Teams which starts with how the $1.7 billion Hubble Telescope was launched into space . . . with a flawed mirror. Kudos to author Charlie Pellerin, (NASA's former top
astrophysicist) for revealing how this very expensive error was ultimately corrected and how the Hubble has subsequently become known as man's greatest scientific achievement.

Kudos to Betsy Laney and Donna F. LaMar, Ph.D. of The Farm “Where Living Things Grow” in Michigan, which offers down-to-earth fun and healing for the whole family. With their motto, “There’s no excuse for abuse,” this=2 0non-profit organization connects people with plants and animals to remember what matters. One of the first things they did following a day of re-branding consulting here at my lake-front home was to add more success stories to their website, including this heart-warming story of Sonny the Donkey. www.LivingFarm.org

Congrats to Kimberly Douglas for this cover endorsement for The Firefly Effect from NYT bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith (What Got You Here Won't Get You There), "Insightful, fun, transformative, weaves practice and analogy into chapters that will spark the creativity of individuals, leaders and their organizations!"

Who says there’s no shortcut to success?! Scott Halford, CSP believes the secret to success is to Be a Shortcut for as many people as possible. When people can count on you to save them time, money and hassles . . .they're more apt to give you their projects, promotions and accounts because they trust you to deliver results.

How Can Sam Help Me Turn Ideas Into Income?
“Ideas are a dime a dozen; and they’re not worth a plug nickel unless you act on them.” – Warren Reed

Did you resonate with the story about P.F. Chang finally deciding to listen to their customers instead of argue with them?

Me too. Over the years, many people have asked if they could "access" me on an ongoing basis so they could ask a quick question or pick my brain regarding something they're working on.

I used to explain I couldn’t accommodate their requests because my days were scheduled with consults and speaking and my nights were busy prepping for the next day's appointments. I said I didn't know when I'd find time to respond and didn't want to make promises I couldn't keep.

After reading that quote from P.F. Chang’s CEO, I had my own Blinding Attack of the Obvious. If this is what people want from me, I'd better figure out a way to make it work.

After much brainstorming with clients, I've come up with a system I think is a win-win for all involved. This new option is explained in detail on www.SamHorn.com. Here are a few FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) about how it works.

1. Do I have to have to know in advance what I want to achieve?

No. That’s the beauty of this format. Many clients know they want a one-of-a-kind brand or signature message and they want to stand out and make more money, but they don’t know how to go about it. They want me to “tell them what to do” and trust me to produce the results they want.

2. How does Sam help me crystallize what’s special about me, my idea or offering?

I use my 25 year experience as a business owner, speaker, author, consultant and originator of POP! to help you identify what you could offer that’s unique and needed. I interview you (often using the W9 form) to pull out your USP (Unique Selling Proposition) and POD (Points of Distinction) and then craft it and capitalize on it.

In other words, what’s your BRAND? How can you be one-of-a-kind vs. one-of-many? How can you focus it, language it and integrate it into your website, marketing material, presentations, proposals, products, services, social media and outreach so it gets noticed, remembered and bought by your target audience?

3. Does Sam just work with entrepreneurs, authors, speakers and consultants?

Although I’ve had the privilege and pleasure of working with Presidents of NSA, ICF, ASTD and ASAE, I have also worked with professors, physicians, corporate executives, stockbrokers, chiropractors, grassroots advocates, INC 500 winners, high tech pioneers and inventors.

Let’s put it this way. What do you care about? Would you like that to get more attention, respect and sales? If so, I can help.

4. Okay, so how does this new option work?

You pay a retainer and can then access Sam's expertise and experience whenever you want. You don’t need to schedule an appointment unless you want to. Pick up the phone or send an email with your questions, content, priorities, whatever, and Sam will get back in touch within 24 hours. It’s easy. She just keeps track of the time spent on your project much like an accountant or attorney, (except they don’t come up with one-of-a-kind ideas and approaches that generate revenue for you for years to come.)

5. How do I get started?

Email Cheri@SamHorn.com to request consulting info. Once you sign up for the retainer option, we will email a questionnaire that helps you describe your project and priorities so Sam can help you hit the ground running.

Ready to get your ideas out of your head and into the world so they can make a positive difference for others and a prosperous living for you. Call 800 SAM-3455 today. We look forward to helping you POP! your success.
