 2010 POP! Hall of Fame
“You’re either breaking out or blending in. And blending in’s for Cuisinarts.” – Sam Horn

Every year I pick the top brand names, taglines, book titles and trends that caught our attention and helped their idea, invention or organization stand out and get noticed . . . for all the right reasons.

The point? If you want to succeed, you need to stand out.

And one of the best ways to stand out is create a catchy phrase that builds buzz by turning everyone who sees it or hears it into a word-of-mouth ambassador who repeats it to others and takes it viral.

All of the phrases below showcase one of the 25 techniques in my
POP! Process. If you have a cause, creation or company you care about – you might want to get a copy of POP! and work through the exercises to coin a NURD (New Word) that helps other people care about what you care about. Who knows? You might make our 2011 POP Hall of Fame.

1. Random Hacks of Kindness: Kudos to this worldwide gathering of tech types collaborating for the common good, and thanks to Nicholas Skytland of NASA for bringing this to my attention.

2. Stuffocating: This NURD (New Word) was coined by TV station TLC for their one hour special on the stifling impact of w-a-y too much stuff.

3. MEtailing: We want it and we want it our way. This online trend of letting people customize their own clothes, shoes and other products is a runaway (runway?) success.

4. Jeggings: Part jeans – part leggings. This Half & Half Word helped this product generate $180 million in sales, proving that NURDS are way more than word play; they’re bottom line profits.

5. Info-besity: We live in a society stuffed with information yet starved for epiphanies.

6. Refudiate: Sarah Palin’s “malaPOPism” received national media attention in which she was tweaked for her tweet where she mixed up (or did she?) “refute” and “repudiate.”

7. SHEconomy: Smart companies understand the power of the purse and are targeting this multi-billion dollar demographic. Props also to Marilynn Tanner Mobley’s BoomerHer.

8. Snowmageddon: What do you call it when 30 inches of snow are dumped on Washington DC and cause a weather apocalypse? An excellent example of a Half 'n Half Term (like Snuba, Diabesity and Adultlescents).

9. You Had Me at Woof: Julie Klam’s book shows how “riffing off” pop culture can provide an unexpected twist to a familiar phrase. The result? A smile and a sale.

10. SerenDestiny: I admit it. I’m partial to this since it’s the title of my next book which is based on the premise that leading the life we’re born to live is no accident (serendipity); it’s a result of acting in alignment with our values and vision so we meet our best future halfway.

Who Said This?
"No one wants to go out mid-sentence."

The author of this quote is a well-known movie star.

This quote is featured in the chapter "Focus on Your 5%" of SerenDestiny that addresses the importance of acting on what's important to us now, rather than assuming an automatic tomorrow and expecting it'll be there waiting for us when we're ready.

As Frank Sinatra said, "You better live every day like it's your last, because one day you're gonna be right." This chapter isn't meant to be morbid - it's meant to remind us that procrastinating on our priorities is a prescription for regrets. Doing ONE thing we really care about can help us create a life that feels right, right now.

Contact us (Cheri@SamHorn.com) with the correct answer in the first 24 hours after this ezine is sent, and your name will be thrown into a hat. The winner will be drawn from that hat and will receive their choice of any 2 of Sam's CD's.

Elevate Your Success Via a Mentoring-Mastermind Group
"If you stick with what you know; you sell yourself short." - Grammy-award winning singer Carrie Underwood

Who has your back . . . and your front?

Who can you turn to when you need outside perspective because you've gotten too close to your work and can't see it clearly anymore?

Who can you count on to give feedback that elevates your business and takes it to a level you couldn't achieve on your own?

If you're fortunate, you have several people you can trust to contribute experience, expertise and support so you're not going it alone.

If you don't already have a group of colleagues like this, join ours.

I am the beneficiary of a brilliant mastermind. My peers have already elevated my personal and professional life in multiple, tangible ways that are better than I could have imagined.

At our first meeting, we worked on collages of what we wanted more of in 2011. It was a delightful experience, gathered together with my buddies, upbeat music playing in the background, happily sorting through piles of magazines and snipping out what caught our attention and carefully placing it on our vision board.

It wasn't until we shared with each other what we had selected and why that Becky's causal observation opened my eyes to a pattern I wasn't even aware I had.

She said, "That's interesting. Sam's collage has all words and mine has all images."

Whoa. Had never occurred to me. What could it mean?

Well, it's evident that I care a lot about words as I make my living speaking, writing and helping people express themselves.

However, was I focusing on that to an unhealthy extreme?

One of two of the wisest things I've heard is that "our strength taken to an extreme becomes our Achilles Heel" and, to paraphrase Carrie Underwood, "If we stick to who and what we know; we sell ourselves short."

Had it become a habit to think only intellectually, from the neck up?

Was I operating within my comfort zone and not reaching out to new people and places?

Would it behoove me to "color" and "flesh out" my world with images of new friends, foreign countries and physical activities?

Rebecca's insight motivated me to go back and create a NEW vision board - one that purposefully includes photos of all the people I care about, plus people I respect and would like to connect with, scenes of cities and museums I'd like to visit, swim races I want to compete in, beaches I want to walk on, conferences I'd like to speak at, bestseller lists I'd like to be on. This time, there's more images, fewer words.

How about you? What would be on your vision board? What does that say about you? Could you carve out time to create a collage that includes words and images of what you'd like to see more of in 2011?

Could you purposefully include new places and people instead of sticking to who and what you know - so you're transcending patterns you're not even aware of that could be limiting you or holding you back?

Could you then post that collage where you'll see it everyday so you keep these images in sight, in mind - the better to (wo)manifest them?

And, if you'd like to benefit from ongoing input from peers who have your back and your front; email us at Cheri@SamHorn.com with Mentoring-Mastermind in the subject heading to find out more about our programs. It'd be a pleasure and a privilege to play a role in your 2011 being everything you hope for - and more.

 What We Say . . . Matters
"When you speak and write, your words echo down the hall, down the pages and down the ages." - Bud Gardner, co-author of Chicken Soup for the Writers' Soul

Have you seen the movie The King's Speech with Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush?

If not, prepare yourself for a powerful story that showcases the power of spoken words spoken well.

It's not an over-statement to say the fate of a nation hung on King George VI's ability to overcome his stammer and deliver a speech that rallied his troops and filled his British countrymen with resolve.

Millions of people looked to him for leadership - and they found it in his stirring, eloquent address.

That movie has inspired me to add a new presentation to my available topics. I've been offering communication-related topics for years based on my award-winning books Tongue Fu!, What's Holding You Back? and POP!

These presentations have focused on how to communicate collaboratively and compellingly and have received excellent ratings from groups as diverse as NASA, Cisco, Boeing and Capital One.

This new presentation focuses on how to design and deliver inspirational presentations that resonate with people and motivate them to pro-actively face circumstances with resolve and hope.

If you're looking for a powerful keynote that shows how the right words - well delivered - can rally your troops, contact us (Info@SamHorn.com) to describe your event and discuss how we can tailor an inspiring program that fulfills your needs and exceeds your expectations.
